Homelessness: Ethics – Policy – Action

The Alumni Council of the Harvard Graduate School of Design (HGSD) in partnership with Harvard Alumni Association, Harvard Alumni Architectural and Urban Society (HAAUS) is organising a ‘Design Impact Series’ which aims to advance the dialogue on the crucial issues which have exposed the persisting inequity across the world. The inaugural event of the series was titled, ‘Design Impact: Transformation at the Intersection of Climate Change, Equity, and Health’ and was held on September 24, 2020. 

The second webinar event of the series titled, ‘Straight-Up Talk: Homelessness - Ethic/Policy/Action’ aims to discuss the causes of increase in homelessness in the cities of the United States and highlight the impact of design interventions to explore ways to work with different actors and communities in order to address the issue of homelessness. 

The webinar will begin with a keynote address by Mr. Binyamin Appelbaum (Editorial Board Member, The New York Times). The event will feature the following three sessions.

Session 1 - Ethics: Is Housing a (Universal) Human Right?

The expert panel comprises: Mr. Binyamin Appelbaum (Editorial Board Member, The New York Times); Prof. Richard Sennett (Chair, United Nations [UN] Habitat Urban Initiatives Group); and Ms. Leilani Farha (UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing).

Session 2 -  Policy: What’s the Problem?

12:30 pm - 1:35 pm EST/ 11:00 pm - 12:05 am IST

The expert speaker will be: Ms. Angela Howard (Senior Vice President, Real Estate and Facilities, Covenant House, New York)

Session 3 - Action: Accelerating Implementation

1:40 pm - 2:45 pm EST/ 12:10 am - 1:15 am IST

The expert panel comprises: Ms. Rosanne Haggerty (Founder, Common Ground Community and Community Solutions); Ar. Michael Lehrer (Founding Partner, Lehrer Architects); Mr. Sam Klein (Co-Founder, Underlay Project); Ms. Claire Elizabeth Williams (Co-Founder and CEO, Foundations for Social Change); and Mr. Kevin Hirai (COO, Flyaway Homes, Los Angeles).

The event will conclude with a summary dialogue delivered by a moderator/curator of a session.
