Cooperative Housing for Slum Free Cities in India – Day 1

Online

Habitat Forum INHAF is conducting a webinar series for furthering the discourse on Indian cities and urban futures. The ‘Rethinking Cities’ series is focused on new thinking, fresh approaches, innovative ideas and engagement of youth for repositioning and solving the urban challenges of this century. Information from the webinar series, which started in June 2020, will feed into a long term societal initiative towards more liveable, inclusive, people-centric, productive and sustainable Indian cities.

The thirtieth webinar from the ‘Rethinking Cities’ series - Cooperative Housing for Slum Free Cities in India Day 1 - will be anchored by Mr. Uday Jain (Project Assistant, Hunnarshala Foundation, Bhuj). The panel aims to discuss how cooperative housing can address the issues regarding quality and affordability of housing for the low income groups, by drawing examples from Uruguay and Switzerland. Further, the discussion will explore ways in which the cooperative structure in India needs to be revived.

The expert panel comprises: Prof. Amita Bhide (Dean, School of Habitat Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai); Dr. Jennifer Duyne Barenstein (Senior Researcher and Head of the World Habitat Research Centre); Dr. Lorenzo Vidal (Associate Researcher, Global Cities Programme, CIDOB); Mr. Gustavo González (General Secretary, Federation of Housing for Mutual Support Cooperatives, Uruguay); and Prof. Gustavo Machado (Faculty of Social Sciences, University of the Republic, Uruguay).

This webinar will be a two part series, where sector experts will aim to discuss conducive aspects for the sustained growth of cooperative housing in some countries. The Day 2 session will be held on November 11, 2020.
